Happy 57th birthday to me!
Since 1996, I've occupied a uniquely popular niche in the world of art and photography; I am one of those crossover artists who defy the easy categorization of weddings as traditional or journalistic (which made me ideal), and I found an audience mostly among other professional wedding and Mitzvahs photographers.
I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1966. My parents weren't photographers, but they were music lovers and artists themselves. My dad became a clarinet and saxophone player and singer. He also became a civil engineer. My mom, a stay-at-home person, had a great voice and an extremely creative mind. I was soon immersed in music, when one of my grandparents (my dad’s dad, a music teacher), taught me how to play the clarinet. My early idols included such jazz-cum-pop legends as Grover Washington, Jr., Spyro Gyra Jay Barnet Beckenstein) as well as composers and lyricists such as Alberto Cortes, Neal Schon, Steve Lukater, Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D’Rivera, Geddy Lee, Pablo Rodriguez Lozada, and Danny Rivera. My first instrument was the clarinet, and I received the only formal instruction of my life -- a total of many private lessons conducted via my grandfather that came with my first instrument, a piccolo/A Flat clarinet, my grandfather gave to me at age 5.
School Years
I was intrigued by photography as a high school student, particularly through the work of Eric Benavides and Brian Hernandez, and I began writing and photographing during this time, but more intensely after I graduated from college. I majored in Philosophy and minored in Peace and Conflict Studies at West Chester University, and I was inspired by the photography of Henry Cartier-Bresson, Ansel Easton Adams, Vivian Maier, Walker Evans, Bambi Cantrell, Denis Reggie, Joe Buissink, Gordon Parks, Monte Zucker, Sid Yoblick, Paul Scihas and John Kellar. I never studied photography in college, but I did study at The New York Institute of Photography via correspondence course and also became an apprentice of both John Kellar, Paul Csihas, and Jeffrey A. Spence/Paul Evans (Silver Sound Entertainment), as the film photography era in the late 1990s came to an end. During this time, I began co-creating art through my personal photography, which inspired me to compose or co-create the name of my company, ajourney designer photographers. In order to get some of my own photographic work published, I also started arranging my own weddings and events, notably sweet 16s and corporate jobs. I also had some photographic success thanks to John Kellar Photography (John Kellar), Lafayette Hill Studios (Sid Yoblick, Ben Yoblick, and Paul Csihas), Ultimate Images (Jeff Spence), and Duca Studio (Tony Duca). I am also a big fan of Charles Eisenstein's work. His essays and books have helped me to develop and improve my own writing. I enjoy listening to a wide range of music, including heavy metal and rap. I also enjoy looking at the incredible co-creators showcased by fearless photographers (Huy Nguyen). I also like to look at the video works that Sustainable Human (Chris Agnos) and Films For Action (Tim Hjersted) collaborated on.
College Years
Christina (Chrissy) Ferko-Diaz of Phoenixville, Pa., and Orland, Maine, became my lovely girlfriend and best friend while I was in college. We've known one other for nearly 30 years and have been married since December 23, 1995. Cataryna, Nestie, and Isabella are three amazing children we procreated. I continued to work for Congreso De Latinos Unidos (housing counselor), for Central Montgomery Mental Health (TSS-therapist staff support), and for The Vanguard Group (communication associate), respectively, as well as photographing weddings, Mitzvahs, and other events for John Kellar Photography, Lafayette Hill Studios, Ultimate Images Photography, Duca Studio, and spending time at home helping to raise our children. Photojournalism helped me form my own distinctive style, with the photojournalistic textures and crossover appeal I attempted to emulate from the photographers I mentioned above, who continue to inspire me today. As you can observe, over the years, I've had a run of achievements, including working alongside these magnificent photographers. I even worked as a ‘busboy’ and cook, cooking and cleaning tables at a Mexican Restaurant named, Casa Maria Restaurant. My photographic style changed during this time, influenced by the many fantastic people I've had the pleasure to work with, as well as the many couples and people I've been fortunate to photograph and become acquainted with. I've worked with DJs, florists, managers from reception venues, pastors, wedding organizers, wedding officiants, and many other wonderful people. I've also become well-known as a photo co-creator. My photographic material, job experience, photographic ability, excitement, charisma, and passion for weddings, Mitzvahs, and events were utilized by Duca Studio, Ultimate Images, Lafayette Hill Studios, and John Kellar Photography, while my own photography style continued to blossom gradually.
2023
I hit a personal high while working alongside Tony (Duca Studio) in his continuous success both as a human being and photographer. Due to personal circumstances, I recently chose to focus only on my own endeavor, and I now intend to totally focus on the progress and development of ajourney. The organization I founded in 2002. This instance of my life is showing me another change, a re-directed of focus, and a different direction of my appeal and purpose. Although I have never stopped photographing in general, including events like weddings and Mitzvahs, since 1996, I now want to book between 30-50 personal weddings, Mitzvahs, or events as part of my own venture via a ajourney under my own personal venture. I'm still fascinated by Henri Cartier-Bresson's photojournalism, Denis Reggie's wedding photojournalism, and the wedding portraiture of Monte Zucker, which I've renamed Storytelling Portraitjournalism. I dedicate my storytelling portraitjournalism to the memory of Monte Zucker, both of my grandparents, Francisco Daz-Belloni/Amalia Navarro-Rodriquez, my father, Nestie Díaz-Navarro, and my mother, Hilda María Valentín Pacheco, all of whom I know are still very close to me and helping me with their vibes as I continue to move forward with this temporary- life-gifted opportunity this existence has given me. I am still quite active in 2023 and will be for the foreseeable future. I am currently publishing my newest website update under, nestordiazvalentin.com (https://www.nestordiazvalentin.com). What I started in 2002, with the help of many people, is still going on today, as I am now completely involved in the development of my venture, under ajourney | nestor diaz-valentin. My return is now accompanied by the continuing efforts to network with people like Nina Guzman (Alianzas De Phoenixville) and other like-minded individuals like Juan Valencia, who can assist me with these ventures of mine; both via the photography as well as the interpreting/translating services. And, of course, as I’ve done since I was a child, I’ll continue writing, reading, but most importantly, thinking.

Feliz Cumpleaños para mi en mis 57 años de vida
He ocupado un nicho singularmente popular en el mundo del arte y la fotografía desde el 1996; soy uno de esos artistas crossover que desafía la fácil categorización de las bodas como tradicionales o periodísticas (lo que me hizo un ideal candidato), y encontré un público sobre todo entre otros fotógrafos profesionales de bodas y Mitzvahs que se estaban tratando de especializar en el ámbito fotográfico del ‘wedding photojournalism’.
En 1966 nací en San Juan de Puerto Rico. Mis padres no eran fotógrafos, pero sí amantes de la música y artistas. Mi padre era clarinetista, saxofonista y cantante. También fue ingeniero civil. Mi madre, ama de casa, tenía una gran voz y una mente extremadamente creativa. Pronto me sumergí en la música, cuando uno de mis abuelos (el padre de mi padre, profesor de música), me enseñó a tocar el clarinete. El ‘photojournalism’ formó parte para que desarrollara mi propio estilo distintivo, con las texturas foto periodísticas y el atractivo cruzado que intenté emular de los fotógrafos que mencioné anteriormente, que continúan inspirándome hoy en día. Como se pueden observar, a lo largo de los años he tenido una serie de logros, entre ellos trabajar junto a unos magníficos fotógrafos. También me he dado a conocer como cocreador fotográfico. Mi material fotográfico, experiencia laboral, habilidad fotográfica, entusiasmo, carisma, y pasión por las bodas, Mitzvahs, y eventos fueron utilizados por Duca Studio, Ultimate Images, Lafayette Hill Studios, y John Kellar Photography, mientras mi propio estilo fotográfico continuaba floreciendo gradualmente.
2023
Mientras trabajaba junto a Tony (Duca Studio) en su continuo éxito como ser humano y fotógrafo llegué a un punto álgido personal. Debido a circunstancias personales, recientemente he optado por centrarme sólo en mi propio esfuerzo, y ahora tengo la intención de centrarme totalmente en el progreso y el desarrollo de ‘ajourney’, la organización que fundé en el 2002 . Esta instancia de mi vida me está mostrando otro cambio, un redireccionamiento de enfoque, y una dirección diferente de lo que prefiero y de mi propósito. Aunque nunca he dejado de fotografiar en general, incluyendo eventos como bodas y Mitzvahs, desde 1996, ahora deseo reservar entre 30-50 bodas personales, Mitzvahs, o eventos como parte de mi propio emprendimiento a través de ‘ajourney’ bajo mi propio emprendimiento personal. Sigo fascinado por el ‘photojournalism’ de Henri Cartier-Bresson, el ‘photojournalism’ de Denis Reggie, y el estilo fotográfico de Monte Zucker, que he rebautizado como ‘Storytelling Portraitjournalism’. Dedico mi ‘storytelling portraitjournalism’ a la memoria de Monte Zucker, de mis dos abuelos, Francisco Daz-Belloni/Amalia Navarro-Rodriquez, de mi padre, Nestie Díaz-Navarro, y de mi madre, Hilda María Valentín Pacheco, todos los cuales sé que siguen muy cerca de mí y me ayudan con sus vibraciones mientras sigo adelante con esta oportunidad de vida temporal que me ha regalado esta existencia planetaria.
